Transforming Lives through Language Education at Salt Lake Community College Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), Utah's largest open-access college, is seeking a dedicated and passionate Chinese Mandarin Tutor to join its community of educators. As a Non-Certified Chinese Mandarin Tutor, you will play a crucial role in supporting students' language learning journey, fostering their understanding of Chinese cultures, and contributing to the vibrant academic environment of the College. About the Role This part-time tutoring position is based at the Center for Languages (CfL) at SLCC, with opportunities for both in-person and Zoom tutoring sessions. The ideal candidate is fluent in Chinese Mandarin, has a passion for language education, and is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Key Responsibilities Tutor SLCC students enrolled in First and Second Semester Chinese (CHI 1010, 1020, 2010, 2020) in-person at the CfL and via Zoom, providing guidance on course materials and assignments. Assist students in leveraging online language-learning programs and resources to enhance their learning experience. Establish and maintain regular tutoring hours throughout the semester/academic year, ensuring consistent support for students. Attend CfL meetings, complete required trainings, and adhere to protocols for scheduling, time submission, and communication. Participate in organizing and hosting cultural events, conversation tables, and other activities that promote language learning and cultural exchange. Create a 2-3 minute introductory video at the beginning of each semester to connect with students and encourage them to seek tutoring support. Engage with the College community by identifying and reaching out to relevant groups, students, and faculty to promote CfL activities. Essential Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Native or near-native fluency in Chinese Mandarin, demonstrated through online proficiency testing. Good computer skills and familiarity with digital tools for language learning. Knowledge of Chinese cultures and traditions. Ability to observe the SLCC Student Code of Conduct. Preferred Qualifications Current student at SLCC with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Language teaching or tutoring experience. Availability to attend SLCC classes in Chinese Mandarin, with instructor approval, to enhance familiarity with course materials and teaching methods. Skills and Competencies Reliability, timeliness, and attention to detail. Increasing knowledge of Chinese language courses (CHI 1010, 1020, 2010, 2020) and related teaching methods. Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Ability to tailor instruction to meet the needs of students with varying levels of competence and backgrounds. Cultural sensitivity and awareness to create an inclusive learning environment.
