Key Responsibilities
In this dynamic and challenging position, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including:
- Utilizing Microsoft Office, Central Square utility billing software, and Neptune Reading software to assist utility customers with their inquiries and concerns
- Coordinating follow-up actions with other functional areas to resolve customer issues in a timely and efficient manner
- Assisting in the collection of delinquent utility accounts and investigating customer complaints regarding services and billings
- Examining bills, meter readings, and related records to determine the validity of customer complaints and notifying customers and appropriate personnel of findings and/or adjustments
- Writing letters to businesses and customers in response to inquiries and arranging for special pick-ups as needed
- Contacting service workers regarding complaint work and processing new account requests for water, sewer, and garbage accounts
- Sorting mail on a daily basis, processing work orders and service orders, and performing related work as necessary
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Preference will be given to applicants with experience in utility customer service and/or Central Square billing software
- Knowledge of utility billing, municipal laws, policies, and practices
- Knowledge of bookkeeping and clerical principles and methods
- Ability to use Excel spreadsheets and Word documents
- Ability to compose correspondence and communicate with irate customers in a courteous manner
- Must have the ability to calmly resolve customer inquiries and work well under stress
Preferred Qualifications
While not required, the following qualifications are preferred:
- Experience working in a customer-facing role, particularly in a utility or municipal setting
- Familiarity with Central Square billing software and Neptune Reading software
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with the public both in person and on the telephone
