Job Overview: Graduate Writing Consultant (Tutor) We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Graduate Writing Consultant (Tutor) to join our Learning Commons team at the University of North Texas at Dallas. As a Graduate Writing Consultant, you will play a crucial role in providing tutorial assistance in writing to students who need supplemental academic support. This part-time position offers a unique opportunity to work with a diverse clientele, including graduate students and advanced student writers, and to develop your skills in tutoring, mentoring, and academic support. Key Responsibilities: Provide one-on-one tutoring sessions to students, both face-to-face and online, to help them develop their writing skills and achieve academic success Work with students to identify areas of improvement and develop strategies to address these areas, including critical thinking, analytical skills, research skills, and expression of thoughts and ideas through academic and professional written communication Create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation and engagement from students Aid students in understanding concepts and developing positive learning skills, without rewriting papers or completing assignments for them Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services and departments as needed Work assigned hours per week, unless making prior arrangements with the supervisor, and attend mandatory trainings Interpret and clarify Learning Commons procedures to students, tutors, and visitors, and lead classroom presentations to advertise Writing Center services Assist administrative staff and professional tutors with special assignments, projects, and events Prepare resources for the Learning Commons, including handouts, workshops, website content, social media posts, and videos Maintain detailed student records via WCOnline for data collection purposes Essential Qualifications: Currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of North Texas at Dallas, making satisfactory progress toward completion of a master's degree program Minimum GPA of 3.0 Recommendation from a faculty member who can attest to the applicant's writing skills (must be in email format and sent to the Learning Commons Director) Intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation Excellent written and oral communication skills Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills Empathy and ability to relate to the diverse student body population at UNT Dallas Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and with the general public Basic MS Office skills and ability to operate a variety of office machines, including personal computers, telephones, and copiers Ability to use web-based software (such as Zoom) to tutor students online Preferred Qualifications: Ability to work 12-19 hours per week Knowledge of University academic policy, procedure, and practices Knowledge of FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) Prior tutoring experience Ability to work under considerable pressure, adjust to constant changes, and handle multiple tasks Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits As a Graduate Writing Consultant (Tutor) at the University of North Texas at Dallas, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in tutoring, mentoring, and academic support, while working with a diverse clientele.
