We're now seeking an experienced and compassionate Parent Advocate to join our team on a part-time, remote basis, to support families navigating the complex special education system.
The Role: A Vital Liaison Between Families and Educational Systems
The Parent Advocate is a critical component of our support structure, serving as a liaison between parents of children with special needs and various educational, legal, and social service systems. This role requires a deep understanding of the special education landscape, excellent communication skills, and a compassionate approach to supporting families through challenging times.
Key Responsibilities: Advocacy, Support, Education, and Collaboration
- Advocacy:
- Attend hearings, meetings, and IEP (Individualized Education Program) reviews to represent and advocate for the interests of parents and their children with special needs.
- Collaborate with parents to understand their concerns and objectives, ensuring their voices are heard during discussions.
- Support:
- Provide emotional and informational support to parents navigating complex systems related to special education and disability services.
- Assist families in understanding their rights and available resources.
- Education and Training:
- Offer workshops and training sessions for parents on navigating the special education system and understanding their rights.
- Develop informational materials to help parents prepare for hearings and meetings.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with schools, service providers, and community organizations to facilitate positive outcomes for children and their families.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including educators, therapists, and legal representatives.
- Documentation:
- Help parents gather necessary documentation and prepare for hearings, ensuring all relevant information is presented effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of interactions with families and progress notes on advocacy efforts.
- Policy Advocacy:
- Stay informed on local, state, and federal laws and policies affecting children with special needs.
- Advocate for policy changes that benefit families and improve services for children with disabilities.
Requirements, Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
To excel in this role, you will need:
- A Bachelor's degree in social work, education, psychology, or a related field (preferred).
- Experience working with children with special needs and their families.
- A strong understanding of the special education system, including IEP processes.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A compassionate, patient, and dedicated approach to helping families.
