Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer - Data Analytics & Data Science to lead our data analysis and reporting efforts. As a technical leader, you will be responsible for guiding the vision, design, and engineering of our data analysis and reporting landscape. Your expertise will be instrumental in shaping our long-term technical strategy, embracing innovation, and providing hands-on guidance as a technical leader for our team. You will lead research on emerging industry trends and provide ongoing guidance to bring those trends to life. Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical guidance, sharing best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
- Adhere to and drive modern software development practices through design reviews.
- Manage system design through well-defined interfaces across multiple components, code reviews, using data/telemetry to decide.
- Develop "best-in-class" engineering for our services by ensuring that the services and components are modular, secure, reliable, diagnosable, easily monitored, and reusable.
- Improve test coverage for services; integrate and implement integration tests; and resolve trouble spots.
- Ensure testability, scalability/monitoring, reliability, and effectiveness; and understand when code is ready to be shared and deployed.
- Focus on business needs through a data-driven approach.
- Investigate and enhance automation, reliability, and monitoring for deployed products.
- Set the strategic vision for data analysis and reporting, aligning with organizational objectives. Provide leadership in guiding the overall direction of data analysis technical initiatives.
- Design, develop, and optimize complex data models and reporting architectures.
- Drive the design and implementation of scalable and efficient data analysis and reporting architectures.
- Ensure the integrity, security, and performance of data products and reporting solutions by collaborating with platforms, data architecture, and management teams.
- Define and implement the long-term technical strategy for data analysis, incorporating technologies and industry trends.
- Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and assess their relevance to the organization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, business analysts, data engineers, platforms architects, and IT professionals, to develop comprehensive data solutions.
- Foster a collaborative environment that enables information sharing and skill development. Lead technical leadership discussions, lunch and learn sessions, and other community-building initiatives for the engineering community within the organization.
- Establish and enforce data quality standards and best practices. Implement processes for data validation, cleansing, and accuracy.
- Evaluate and select suitable data analysis and reporting tools to address business needs. Lead requirement meetings and partner closely with platforms and framework teams during the evaluation and implementation of these tools.
- Partner with engineering and development teams to create and maintain documentation for data analysis processes, reporting designs, and data models.
- Monitor the performance of data analysis and reporting systems; and provide technical leadership to drive stability and scalability of data products and reporting solutions.
- Implement measures to enhance performance and troubleshoot issues.
- Provide strategic insights and recommendations based on data analysis to support decision-making at the organizational level.
- Recommend system upgrades to support business growth and evolving technology requirements.
- Utilize Azure services, such as Azure SQL DW (Synapse), ADLS, Azure Event Hub, Cosmos, Databricks, Delta-Lake to enhance and accelerate delivery of our data products and services.
- Implement big data and NoSQL solutions by developing scalable data processing platforms to drive high-value insights to the organization.
Essential Qualifications
- Proven track record with at least 15+ years of hands-on experience in data analysis and reporting roles.
- 5+ years of experience in leadership or senior roles; demonstrating the ability to effectively guide and lead a team.
- 5+ years of experience working with Cloud technologies, such as ADLS, Azure Databricks, Spark, Azure Synapse, Cosmos DB, DBT, and other big data technologies.
- Demonstrated advanced proficiency in data analysis tools, languages, ML, and frameworks (e.g., Spark, PowerBI, SQL, Python, R).
- Proficiency in data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools to effectively communicate insights.
- Demonstrated expertise in working with cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, to architect and implement scalable and efficient data analysis solutions.
- In-depth understanding and practical application of Lakehouse architecture principles, combining the best of data lakes and data warehouses for powerful and flexible data management.
- Advanced SQL skills. Strong understanding of relational databases and business data ability to write complex SQL queries against multiple data sources.
- Experience handling high-volume and high-velocity data streams, and designing systems that can handle the demands of real-time or near-real-time analysis.
- Experience in shaping the strategic vision for data analysis and reporting initiatives within an organization.
- Successful management of data analysis projects, including planning, execution, and delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, adapt to emerging technologies, and implement industry best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership and responsibility of critical issues and close them to resolution.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data Science, or a related technical discipline.
- Significant industry certifications are a plus.
- Experience in retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, supply chain.
