HIM Coder, Inpatient

Job Description: • Assigns codes accurately to diagnoses and procedures within the medical record to comply with federal and state regulations • Sequences codes accurately for proper and optimal DRG assignment • Queries physicians or hospital staff as needed to ensure proper assignment of codes • Abstracts data from the medical records and assures that all required elements are appropriately entered into the hospital information system • Completes coding according to established time frame and ensures reduced DNFB accounts • Maintains excellent accuracy rate for proper sequencing of codes for proper DRG assignment per coding guidelines • Discusses medical record information with providers, quality, and CDI when necessary, in accordance with coding guidelines • Contacts providers or other staff to obtain missing documentation or signatures timely in an effort to reduce DNFB accounts • Abstracts data with a high accuracy rate in accordance with established policy • Adapts to changing department demands evidenced by higher department efficiency • Ensures compliance with medical coding policies and guidelines • Maintains productivity standards per established monthly goals • Performs other duties as assigned Requirements: • High school diploma or equivalent • Previous hospital or medical setting or patient coding experience • CCS • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills • Vigilance and keen attention to detail • Proper phone and email etiquette for frequent hospital and private provider exchanges • Excellent time management to meet deadlines and productivity targets • Intermediate computer skills • Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology • Understanding of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS • Knowledge and experience using an encoder, and EMR required • Ability to work independently in a remote environment • Ability to work under pressure • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to meet productivity standards • Ability to interact effectively with other staff members to complete certain aspects of job Benefits: • Medical Plan • Prescription drug coverage & In-House Employee Pharmacy • Dental Plan • Vision Plan • Flexible Spending Account (FSA) - Healthcare • FSA - Dependent Care • Retirement Savings and Investment Plan • Basic Group Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance • Supplemental Group Term Life & Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance • Disability Benefits – Long Term Disability (LTD) • Disability Benefits – Short Term Disability (STD) • Employee Assistance Program • Commuter Transit • Commuter Parking • Supplemental Life Insurance - Voluntary Life • Spouse - Voluntary Life • Employee - Voluntary Life • Child Voluntary • Legal Services • Voluntary Accident, Critical Illness and Hospital Indemnity Insurance • Voluntary Identity Theft Insurance • Voluntary Pet Insurance • Paid Time-Off Program
