About the position
The University of Washington (UW) is seeking a Metadata Technical Specialist to join the Cataloging and Metadata Services team. This position is under the supervision of the Co-Interim Head of the Metadata and Cataloging Initiatives Unit. The Metadata Technical Specialist will develop and maintain technically-intensive cataloging, metadata, and database management workflows. This role involves working with colleagues to perform and adapt metadata workflows using sophisticated software, including a variety of general and library-specific applications and databases. The specialist will play a key role in linked data initiatives at the University of Washington Libraries and will support metadata creation, copy cataloging, and database management across various systems within the UW Libraries.
Responsibilities
• Applies advanced knowledge of data manipulation and programming.
• Collaborates with colleagues in CAMS to develop and maintain technically-intensive cataloging and metadata workflows.
• Creates and implements automated and semi-automated workflows to convert metadata between formats, and extracts, transforms, and loads metadata using APIs.
• Contributes to linked open data projects.
• Assists in training, problem-solving, and guiding the work of student specialists in the Metadata and Cataloging Initiatives Unit.
• May supervise students.
• Participates in and may lead catalog maintenance projects.
• Performs descriptive, subject, and genre/form complex copy cataloging and classification of monographic resources using Resource Description and Access (RDA), LC-PCC Policy Statements, Library of Congress classification, Library of Congress subject headings and genre/form terms, and OCLC MARC tagging.
• May serve on committees and task forces.
• Understands and abides by the Libraries Personal Communication Responsibilities.
• Communicates appropriately, effectively and positively.
• Plays an active role in staying informed and participating in Libraries and unit meetings, activities, and events.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• High school graduation or equivalent AND four years of applicable library technical experience including one year of experience in the area of specialization OR equivalent education/experience.
• Experience with at least one coding language, such as Python or Java.
Nice-to-haves
• Ability to learn and use software applications and coding languages as needed.
• Experience mapping between different metadata schemas and ontologies.
• Experience using XML technologies for data processing.
• Familiarity with the Resource Description & Access (RDA) Cataloging rules and RDA/RDF ontology.
• Experience with MARC21 metadata.
• Familiarity with Ex Libris Alma.
• Ability to document and explain complex procedures in person and in writing.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills in an electronic environment.
• Familiarity with using APIs.
