About the position
The Epic Operational Systems Engineer position is remote-based and involves providing analytical and technical expertise in the planning, design, installation, maintenance, proactive monitoring, and support of the Epic system and related third-party application technology. The role is responsible for technical application requirements and infrastructure components, including the installation and administration of Epic operational database (ODB) environments. The engineer serves as a subject matter expert and technical resource for troubleshooting and resolving complex issues, as well as providing guidance and insight to others.
Responsibilities
• Creates and manages the ODB environments that serve production, reporting, disaster recovery, training, and non-production needs.
• Installs and maintains the administrative and monitoring tools necessary for high levels of availability and performance of the Epic system.
• Provides an understanding of performance metrics, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues.
• Manages logins for different types of access, including login behavior and working environment configuration.
• Applies IRIS and Epic upgrades and updates to production and non-production environments.
• Configures and maintains environment copies according to the environment strategy.
• Serves as a subject matter expert providing technical guidance and insight to others.
• Identifies process improvement opportunities, ensuring the implementation of best practice and process changes.
• Responds to emergency and after-hours issues.
• Engages in capacity planning exercises to ensure adequate system resources.
• Collaborates with technical teams and Epic to ensure proactive support.
• Writes and maintains scripts to improve system management tasks.
• Participates in change control processes for all planned application and technical activities.
• Maintains and tests processes related to business continuity.
• Follows vendor and Epic best practices for hardware and software configuration.
• Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures.
Requirements
• Associate's degree in Information Technology or a related field.
• Five (5) to seven (7) years of systems administration experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Comprehensive knowledge of UNIX and/or Windows Server administration.
• Minimum of five (5) years' experience configuring, monitoring, and administering a client/server based application.
• Strong Unix skills using the command-line prompt, including navigating directory structures and file manipulation.
• Understanding of operating system concepts such as user and group ownership and file permissions, file system/volume group configuration.
• Knowledge of a command shell (Korn, POSIX, Bourne, or C), plus languages and utilities such as awk, sed, and Perl.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with clients, vendors, and Trinity colleagues.
• Ability to learn Epic's software and Certification will be required after training is complete.
