Customs and Import Attorney
Our client, a leading global technology company, is seeking an experienced Customs & Import Attorney to support its Trade Legal team on a 12-month contract. This role will provide strategic counseling on U.S. and international import compliance, including HTS classification, country of origin determinations/marking requirements, tariff impact assessments, and applicable partner government agency requirements (e.g., FDA), while partnering cross-functionally to mitigate risk and strengthen trade compliance policies, processes, and controls. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in U.S. import laws, experience engaging with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and a strong track record drafting and negotiating global trade compliance provisions. This position is remote anywhere in the U.S. Responsibilities • Provide legal and practical guidance to internal stakeholders on U.S. and global customs/import compliance • Perform HTS classifications, COO determinations (including marking considerations), and tariff impact analyses tied to products, infrastructure initiatives, partnerships, R&D efforts, prototypes, vendors, and suppliers • Advise on additional U.S. and international legal/regulatory requirements applicable at the time of import (e.g., FDA) • Partner cross-functionally across the organization to evaluate and reduce import compliance risk related to business initiatives and transactions • Support the design, rollout, oversight, and ongoing enhancement of trade compliance policies, processes, and controls, including addressing findings from audits or reviews • Draft, review, and provide guidance on global trade compliance language in contracts • Support special projects and other compliance program efforts as needed Minimum Qualifications • J.D. and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (or foreign equivalent) • Significant years of overall legal experience • Several years advising on U.S. import laws in-house or at a law firm, including HTS classifications, COO determinations, COO labeling, and responding to regulator inquiries • Experience drafting and negotiating global trade compliance provisions • Experience leading and managing outside counsel relationships • Strong legal judgment, business sense, and strategic mindset Preferred Qualifications • In-house experience or advising clients in technology, telecommunications, consumer electronics, and/or large-scale infrastructure environments • Experience counseling on non-U.S. import and customs requirements • Familiarity with FDA requirements for medical device and laser imports • Experience with other partner government agency (PGA) requirements applicable at import • Exposure to U.S. and international export controls and sanctions frameworks Apply tot his job
