About the positionThe Health Information Analyst - Vital Statistics Specialist at the University of Michigan is responsible for the timely and accurate submission of vital records information, including birth and loss certificates, to the State of Michigan. This role involves direct interaction with patients and families, data management, and compliance with state regulations. The analyst will work closely with various departments to ensure accurate reporting and maintain relationships with state and county offices.Responsibilities• Interact directly with parents/guardians of newborn deliveries to collect required medical and statistical information. • Query systems to locate necessary information for submission to County/State. • Report unit-specific statistics as defined by management. • Accurately enter data into the State of Michigan VERA system. • Report any potential chart documentation errors and assist with corrections. • Maintain compliance with safety programs and regulatory requirements. • Participate in department/unit activities, including staff meetings and in-services.• Demonstrate excellent customer service skills in interactions with diverse patients and staff. Requirements• Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field. • Knowledge of standard medical terminology and ability to read complex medical documentation. • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect and analyze medical information. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines. • Strong verbal and written communication skills.• Registration as a Notary Public required within six months of hire. • Prior experience using an EHR/EMR platform (e.g., EPIC) is required. Nice-to-haves• Associate's Degree in Health Information Technology or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or Healthcare Administration. • Knowledge of legal requirements for reporting births. • Certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). • Experience using UMHHC/Michigan Medicine information systems/applications.Benefits• Shift premium pay under certain conditions. • Remote work opportunities after training and performance-based competencies are achieved.
