Experienced Afterschool Teacher/Tutor – Substitute for Youth Development Programs in Ventura County

We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated Afterschool Teacher/Tutor – Substitute to join our team. As a key member of our youth development programs, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality care and education to children in our community. Job Overview This is a part-time and on-call position, offering the freedom and flexibility to work at various locations across Ventura County, including Agoura Hills, Westlake, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, and Simi Valley. As an Afterschool Teacher/Tutor – Substitute, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing age-appropriate program activities that promote learning, achievement, and belonging among youth. Key Responsibilities Plan, organize, and implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities that cater to the diverse needs of school-age youth. Nurture children through purposeful programming dedicated to building achievement and belonging in youth and relationships among youth and within families. Supervise children, classrooms, or sites, and all activities, including ADA accommodations where appropriate, to ensure a safe and inclusive environment. Make ongoing, systematic observations and evaluations of each child to monitor their progress and provide targeted support. Cultivate positive relationships and maintain effective communication with parents, engaging them as volunteers and connecting them to the YMCA. Use positive reinforcement techniques to address children's behavioral concerns and promote social-emotional learning. Attend scheduled staff meetings, trainings, and complete all assigned online trainings to stay updated on best practices and industry developments. Participate in family nights and program activities to foster a sense of community and build strong relationships with families. Essential Qualifications To be considered for this role, you must meet the following requirements: Meet educational and experience qualifications established by state law, including completion of at least six (6) postsecondary semester units of specified early childhood education classes or a valid Child Development Assistant permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Be at least 18 years of age. Have knowledge of acceptable child care and day camp practices. Demonstrate initiative to plan, lead, and participate in activities. Complete all required online trainings before starting work, which will be compensated for accordingly. Familiarity with mandated reporting and steps that need to be taken. Preferred Qualifications While not essential, the following qualifications are preferred: Previous experience working with school-age youth in a similar setting. Strong understanding of child development principles and practices. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment. Familiarity with YMCA programs and services. Flexibility and adaptability to work in a variety of settings and adapt to changing circumstances.
