Job Summary
As an Academic Advisor I - Graduate, you will be responsible for providing comprehensive academic advisement to graduate students, processing graduate student admissions, and offering professional guidance to supplement and enhance the academic experience. You will work closely with faculty advisors, program coordinators, and other university staff to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed. This role requires a strong understanding of academic programs, policies, and procedures, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide complete and accurate academic advisement to current and prospective graduate students, including guidance on degree requirements, course selection, and career goals
- Process graduate student admissions, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and faculty as needed
- Monitor the academic progress of a student caseload, providing proactive outreach and support to ensure timely student progression
- Work with faculty advisors and program coordinators to ensure students receive a Program of Work and enroll in the correct classes for their degree or certificate
- Analyze and interpret student data, transcripts, and placement results to inform advising decisions
- Enter advising notes into the university's student information system, following best practices for documenting student appointments and contacts
- Prepare for and document appointments, answer emails, complete degree audits, and process add/drop forms as needed
- Maintain a clear understanding of all applicable federal, state, and university policies and procedures, staying up-to-date on relevant academic programs and support services
- Represent the College of Education at events on campus, assisting with planning and staffing events as needed
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- A Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as education, counseling, or a related field
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with students, faculty, and staff
- Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have:
- A Master's degree in a related field, with one year of experience working with college students or adolescents in an advising capacity
- Accuracy in evaluating and articulating information on students to faculty and administrators, and in interpreting institutional rules and regulations
- Experience in admissions and/or recruitment of college/university students
- Knowledge of Texas Education Agency (TEA) policy
